With more than half of our workforce eligible to retire over the next decade, we are always looking for bright new talent.
Most of our internships are full-time summer positions, but we also offer some part-time year-round co-op internships that can be set up to accommodate your class schedule. All internships are paid and include some level of benefits, such as a 401(k) and paid time off, and many of them can result in full-time jobs down the road, based on performance. We do require that our interns be enrolled in a full-time bachelor or master’s program and be actively taking classes. If your school requires that internships earn academic credit, we can work with them to facilitate that.

FOCUS ON XCEL ENERGY’S SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Our summer internship program is a structured program that begins with kick off events at our headquarter locations in Minnesota, Texas and Colorado. As a summer intern, you will work on challenging projects and have the opportunity to visit other Xcel Energy facilities in your area. You will have weekly calls with your assigned mentor, and submit monthly reports to document your projects and enhance your resume. All summer interns prepare a final presentation on their experience for their peers and compete for awards.
SYSTEM PROTECTION ENGINEERING INTERNSHIP JOB

Xcel Energy is looking to fill a System Protection Engineering Internship role for either the Lubbock, TX or Amarillo, TX offices.
Position Summary
Work with the Engineering staff to support plant projects, both capital and ops/maintenance. Work as an entry level engineering analyst doing tasks spanning all aspects of plant operations including performance/efficiency, emissions control, contract and project management, specifying new and replacement equipment, making process improvement recommendations, supporting requests from operations and maintenance. Through practical field experience and mentoring, successful candidate will gain significant professional confidence and people skills.
Minimum Requirements
- Must be enrolled in an ABET accredited Electrical Engineering program
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to communicate effectively; both written and verbally
- Must be self- motivated, have good mechanical aptitude, and ability to work well with others
Preferred
- Course work in power generation or project management and an interest in the power industry desirable
This internship will be a year-round internship role where we will work with your school hours.
