Students are not permitted to intern or work (paid or unpaid) in the UK without a Tier-4 visa (approximately $600USD), unless they are the holder of an EEA or Swiss passport.

Get out of the classroom and into the community! Internships help students immerse in British culture, make life-long connections, and gain invaluable hands-on professional experience.

Academic Internships

Students in the NYU London Academic Internship Program learn about British culture and professional life through internship placements in a wide range of industries. This for-credit program includes two components:

  1. Guaranteed (minimum 16hr/week) internship placement
  2. Participation in the Internship Seminar and Fieldwork course

In order to enroll in this program, students must participate in a competitive application process. Successful applicants are typically adaptable, flexible, goal-oriented, and open-minded. Students accepted to the NYU London Academic Internship Program must be available for (2) full days between Monday and Thursday for their internship.
While there is no cost to participate in the Academic Internship Program, students that participate are subject to a financial penalty should they withdraw from the program.

If you are interested in participating in this program in the Spring 2018 semester, please join us for an information session on Monday, September 11, at 6:00pm at 383 Lafayette St. Room C-06. RSVP via NYU CareerNet! All questions may be directed to global.internships@nyu.edu.

Internship Placements

NYU has partnered with EUSA, a non-profit organization, to identify custom placements for students in the academic internship program. Unlike a traditional internship search, where students as job seekers are applying directly to organizations and weighing opportunities, EUSA conducts this entire process on participants’ behalf. EUSA weighs opportunities based on students’ academic and professional goals, resulting in one placement.

Internship opportunities vary semester by semester; therefore, no specific placement list is available. Placement opportunities reflect trends in the context of the UK job market. Some sample placement industries include: Accounting, Advertising, Arts and Museums, Communications, Corporate Finance, Education, Fashion Marketing and PR, Hospitality, Journalism, Law, Marketing, Politics, Public Health, Theater Production, and more. If you do not see your industry of interest or have questions, email global.internships@nyu.edu.

Internship Seminar and Fieldwork Course

Internship Seminar & Fieldwork – NODEP-UA 9982 or INDIV-UG 9250 – 4 points

Enrollment by permission only. Application required.

The seminar portion of the course explores many different aspects of your internship site. The goal is to finish the semester with an in-depth understanding of the company or organization, including its approach, its policies, and the context in which it operates. We will also discuss more generally the state of the contemporary workplace and ourselves as workers. Finally, you will use the seminar to reflect critically and analytically on the internship experience and as a way to refine your own personal and professional goals.

Application Instructions

Students interested in participating in the Spring 2018 NYU London Academic Internship Program need to submit an application by Friday, September 15 (11:59pm ET). Students will be notified of admission in early October. This program is competitive, and students are encouraged to take the application process seriously.

Non-Credit Internships

In the UK, internship placements are considered for-credit opportunities that are accompanied by academic coursework. That said, part-time work, which can often resemble a traditional US internship, is permissible for students with a Tier 4 Visa up to 20 hours per week under certain circumstances.

Types of permitted part-time work include:

  1. Paid opportunities for up to 20 hours per week
  2. Unpaid opportunities for up to 20 hours per week at:
    1. a charity or voluntary organization – Follow this link to see if an organization is a registered charity in the UK: http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk/find-charities/
    2. an associated fundraising body – an organization that raises money for a charity or voluntary organization
    3. a statutory body – an organization set up by government legislation

No other unpaid work opportunities are permitted.

UK employment law distinguishes between unpaid part-time work, which requires a Tier 4 visa, and volunteering, which does not. Some indicators of engaging in unpaid part-time work include:

  1. Whether the student must personally perform the work or permitted to send a substitute
  2. Filling an official role as an employee where the organization depends on your work
  3. Repercussions for absence
  4. Possible employment contract

NYU London does not offer support for identifying non-academic work opportunities. Students may utilize Wasserman career resources to assist with their job search. NYU London does, however, offer an extensive volunteer program that is open to all students irrespective of visa status. Please follow this link for more information.
Students may email global.internships@nyu.edu with any questions or concerns.
