Intern – Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering (Nuclear Spent Fuel)

Job Summary

As an intern in the Nuclear Spent Fuel group at Dominion, you will be responsible for the development of a comprehensive database of fuel performance information to assist staff engineers in performing evaluations for future dry storage campaigns. This work would include the calculation of average and max planar enrichments from fuel rod blanket and central stack regions, assessing fuel and fuel insert component conditions, compiling information from our fuel that is already in dry storage, and confirming the integrity of fuel we intend to load into dry storage.

Possible additional tasks include reviewing programs that automatically verify technical specification parameters, assisting in reviewing design drawings and technical specifications for a new dry storage system, completing dose trending updates, and providing engineering dispositions for nonconforming fuel and dry cask storage components. The Nuclear Spent Fuel intern may also perform fuel inspections and assist with dry cask loading campaigns at Dominion Energy’s nuclear power stations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • Solid engineering skills, commensurate with grade level.
  • Good communication skills, technical writing skills, and computer skills.
  • An inquisitive nature, an ability to follow written and verbal directions, and strong professional ethics.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with teams

Education Requirements

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from an ABET accredited program at a four year college or university.
  • Must be a current sophomore or junior with an anticipated graduation date in 2019 or 2020
  • Must have a 3.0 minimum GPA
